Lien Foundation, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National University Hospital are partnering to develop “A Kinder ICU”, which aims to integrate palliative care into everyday ICU practices.

A visit to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is highly distressing. Its clean and sterile environment is a stark backdrop to the physical and emotional distress patients and their families experience, as they wrestle with uncertainties of the patient’s prognosis. 15-22% of ICU patients die in the ICU. Yet for most patients, palliative care is only delivered in last few hours or days in the ICU.

This cross-cluster programme aims to bring more comfort to patients and their families, and improve their experience in the ICU during a difficult time. Upon admission to the ICU, all patients will be screened to identify those with high palliative care needs, so that patients can receive earlier pain and symptom relief, while complex cases get escalated early to the specialist palliative care team. Family members who are emotionally distressed will also be assessed so that professional help can be rendered promptly.
