When we started investing in Singapore’s early childhood space almost 20 years ago, things were different. Preschool teachers were earning similar salaries as bus drivers.
To get the wheels turning, we commissioned the Economist Intelligence Unit to conduct a global ranking, named the Starting Well index. Singapore came in a dismal 29th out of 45 countries, ruffling a few feathers.
Besides shedding light on the challenge, we offered solutions. We believe the quality of education will never exceed the quality of its teachers. Spaces matter too, because the environment is the 2nd teacher.
One of our pilots, Mission I’mPossible 1, a screening and support programme for children with developmental needs, was scaled up by the government nation-wide. Another – a preschool named Caterpillar’s Cove – won the President’s Design Award for Design of the Year, inspiring new ways to think about preschool space design.
Progress has been made and we remain invested in this important space, but are now more selective in where we play.
