The Lien Collaborative for Palliative Care (Beijing) 连氏北京缓和医疗协作 is a three-year programme spearheaded by Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the Lien Foundation to strengthen palliative care in Beijing, China.
Against the backdrop of China’s rapidly ageing population and growing demand for patient-centred care, the programme brings together Singapore and China’s expertise to build palliative care capability, develop future clinical leaders, and support longer-term policy and ecosystem reform. It complements national efforts in China by addressing key gaps, including the shortage of trained specialists and limited public awareness of palliative care.
Working with leading medical institutions in Beijing, the programme focuses on equipping healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, compassionate palliative care to patients with serious illness.
The programme adopts a multi-pronged capacity-building approach that combines structured training, mentorship and clinical exposure. Key components include an online modular curriculum for doctors, nurses, and medical social workers; onsite Train-the-Trainer workshops in Beijing; and fortnightly online complex case conferences that enable real-time clinical learning and mentorship with Singapore faculty. Selected high-performing participants will also undertake clinical observerships in Singapore to gain exposure to advanced service models and quality-improvement frameworks. In parallel, the programme supports the adaptation of treatment protocols and practice guidelines for local use, alongside the development of public-facing advocacy videos to strengthen clinician–patient communication around end-of-life care.
